Father Fintan P NELLY (1919 - 1999)
He died peacefully in Marymount Hospice, Cork after a long illness on Tuesday, January 19th, 1999.
Fintan’s first missionary appointment took him to the Vicariate of Ondo-Ilorin and for the next thirty years he played an active part in helping to build up the Kingdom in an area which now comprises three separate dioceses. In 1977 he was forced to leave Africa by a pernicious strain of malaria which resisted all treatment.
In 1978 he took up an appointment in the diocese of Killaloe and he served the people of Birr and Kinnity. Some years later he moved to the Diocese of Clonfert where he worked in the parish of Mullagh and Killoran until ill-health forced him to retire to Blackrock Road.
Since 1994 he bas battled with illness. However, his indomitable spirit never wavered and in 1996 he fulfilled a cherished literary ambition by publishing a book of poetry -A Few Poems. It comprises eighteen poems which give invaluable insights into Father Fintan's life as a man and as a missionary. 'Memories of Gort', 'Nigerian Nights " 'Goret ti Hanrahan of Gort " reveal memorable moments in his life and the people who helped create them.
As we mourn the loss of a good-natured and good-humoured missionary we thank God for the gift of his generous life.
