Father George LANDRY (1918 – 2004)
On October 13, SMA said farewell to one of its most beloved priests, Fr. George Landry, who died at the age of 85, a result of increasingly frail health. A funeral Mass was held October 16 in the SMA Chapel at American Province Headquarters, Tenafly, New Jersey. Burial followed at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly. Fr. Landry is survived by several nieces and nephews.
George Landry was born in Quebec, Canada on December 16, 1918. He immigrated with his family to the United States in 1924 and lived in Burlington, Vermont. He earned a BA degree in Education at St. Michael's College (Winooski Park, Vermont) an MA from Universite de Montreal and an MA in Education from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Fr. Landry joined SMA in 1950 and was ordained to the priesthood on February 6, 1954. He served in Liberia for 33 years, making a difference in the lives of many through his gifts as an educator. Those who knew him, describe Fr. Landry as a teacher filled with enthusiasm, humility and dedication.
His period (1955-58) as principal of St. Francis School in Pleebo saw tremendous growth and progress. He taught at Maryland College in Harper City and simultaneously became principal at Our Lady of Fatima High School in Cape Palmas. Fr. Landry also served at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Monrovia, Bishop Juwle High School in Zwedru and the SMA Guest House in Monrovia. In 1987 he returned to the United States and served in South Carolina and the Bahamas. He retired to Tenafly in 1993.
Fr. Landry was honored in 1997 with a special award presented by the Alumni Association of Our Lady of Fatima & St. Francis High Schools of Liberia in the Americas. Members of the association attended the funeral and paid a tribute to Fr. Landry in words and with song, offering a touching rendition of their alma mater
