Fr Owen had been  in failing  health for some  time and,  in December 2021,  he transferred to St Theresa’s Nursing Unit, Blackrock Road, Cork. He died peacefully in the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork on Monday, 2 May 2022, aged 86 years.
